For boys and girls there are some great urban images to give their space an edgy vibe. From London underground signs to traffic lights they can create a little bit of the city in the bedroom. If they are hankering after a New York state of mind there are fire hydrants and skyscrapers to transport them to the Big Apple. If their style is more Parisian chic there are gorgeous decals of Parisian rooftops to bring some VaVa Voom to their lives. These come in a variety of colours but look particularly striking in black. This may prove a good compromise if you don t want them to go black all over!
Mankind has striven over the millennia to make his environment as agreeable as possible. The cave paintings at Lascaux almost certainly had spiritual significance for early modern man but might it not equally be the case that he was just fed up with the sight of smoky limestone as we ourselves have tired of textured plaster finishes? Might it not also be the case that wall stickers are the pinnacle of this search for visual nirvana? I think they are.
Similarly the design savvy consumer tries to make a statement of individuality in their own home. So, we see vintage finds rubbing alongside IKEA basics, shabby chic mixed with modernist pieces and glossy finishes next to recycled, eco-friendly materials.
You may think that it is impossible to transform a kitchen or bathroom without a major refit but think again. Again wall decals can be added to kitchen doors to make a radical difference. You could use flocks of birds flying across the cupboards – sort of an ironic twist on Hilda Ogden s flying ducks. Or you could use pretty floral for a Cath Kidston style makeover. In the bathroom there are small patterns available that could be used to decorate plain white tiles. Or why not add some glamour with a graphic of a chandelier or a mirror with candelabra?
